The Ilmenausperrwerk in Hoopte (city of Winsen / Luhe) is located at the mouth of the Ilmenau in the Elbe. It forms part of a flood protection concept on the tidal river Unterelbe from the Geesthacht barrage to the mouth of the river into the North Sea, which was developed as a result of the heavy storm surge in February 1962.

The Ilmenausperrwerk, the southernmost barrage on the Lower Elbe, protects the lowlands of Ilmenau and Luhe. The construction of the barrage was begun in 1969. At the end of 1973, the barrage was put into operation for the time being, but it was completed in May 1976. The construction costs amounted to the equivalent of about 12 million euros (about 23.8 million DM).
