A natural spectacle beyond compare: The Briesetal was mined by glacier movements during the Ice Age and leads its river - the Briese - very leisurely. In principle, the water stands and it resembles a fairy-tale marshland, which houses many animals. We saw several squirrels, saw woodpeckers knocking and swans and ducks swimming.

There are also several information boards and a small nature trail for young and old.

The Briesetal is a totally fascinating and species-rich landscape with the natural upper course of the Briese through the alder forests and low moor meadows. It offers a diverse habitat for flora and fauna.
It seems idyllic, somewhat magical and bizarre at the same time.

The course of the Briese is largely determined by a glacial channel.
It rises on the western Barnim in the Wandlitzer See.
The Briese flows into the Havel near the western border of Birkenwerder and Hohen Neuendorf.

The name "Briese" is derived from the alder forest of the valley, the "Briesewald". This was previously called "The Briesen" (Slavic breza = birch).

The river was of economic importance in the past when peat was cut in its surroundings and it drove three water mills between Zühlsdorf and Birkenwerder-Untermühle.

Today the Briesetal is a nature reserve.
The preservation of the ever rarer fen meadows and the largely untouched water landscapes of the alder forests is an immensely important goal of nature and species protection.

Alder forests often grow on fen soils that are better supplied with nutrients, with a focus on planar to submontane regions. It is named after the dominant species of black alder (Alnus glutinosa). The trunk base with stilt roots is typical of the trees; Thanks to its adventitious roots, the black alder can cope with heavy moisture and fluctuating water levels comparatively better than many other tree species.
