The Shrine of Remembrance was built to provide a place of mourning and remembrance for the 19,000 Victorians who died in World War I (1914-18). Today it is a place of remembrance for those who died in the line of duty and those who have sacrificed in all wars since the formation of Australian Federation in 1901.

Many were buried in graves far from home, so the Shrine provided a place for families to remember their loved ones.

It was designed by two returning soldiers to Melbourne, architects Philip Hudson and James Wardrop.

The inspiration for the external outline came from one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.

While direct experience and knowledge of the events of World War I and later conflicts dwindles, interest in them is growing. Today the Shrine places a strong emphasis on education and information.
