In the Neolithic period, numerous dwelling caves were dug into the soft, porous rock of the bay, which were used as burial sites during the Roman occupation of Crete. To date, they have remained the most famous attraction of Matala. In the Minoan era this was probably the port of Phaistos; in Roman times Matala was the port of Gortyn. The Saracens under Abu Hafs Omar, who conquered Crete in 824, first landed in Matala.

In the 1960s, hippies from around the world (including many young Americans who refused to take part in the Vietnam War) settled in the Neolithic cave dwellings and established a large commune there. Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell also lived here at times.

When I was here for the first time almost 30 years ago, you could still smell the remains of the hippies in some caves, that's better now, but there's an entrance fee.

Very touristy, but a photo from the caves onto the beach is probably part of every Crete vacation - otherwise you wouldn't be there. Entrance fee to visit the cave complex, well. We saw it and can get a general idea of what it was like here, so that's good. When we visited, the influx of tourists was limited, but the huge parking lot suggests bad things for the high season.

Matala, one place = pure vacation. We weren't there until around 6 o'clock in the evening, so it wasn't overcrowded. A leisurely stroll was the order of the day. Another fantastic dinner at George's Yard. It simply tasted good and Yvonne takes great care of her guests. Definitely a recommendation and it's best to stay overnight so you can really enjoy the atmosphere.

The living caves are the big attraction of Matala. They are probably over 8000 years old. Fortunately, the area is now under observation and therefore free from the garbage of the often careless visitors in earlier years.

The former tombs from Roman times were inhabited by hippies in the 1960s, but that spirit is still there today. There are many handmade items to buy in Mantala and it is a great town in Crete.
