Two magnificent buildings tower over the town of Schleiden, past which the Olef River flows: the castle, which now houses a retirement home, and the church, built as a castle chapel. The restaurant mentioned in some posts appears to be permanently closed.

Schleiden Castle used to be the castle of the lords of Schleiden from the house of the Counts of Blankenheim. Its origin is dated to the 12th century. Only the south wing and parts of the east wing remain from the earlier castle. When the complex was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century, the courtyard side was decorated with a Renaissance portal. In 1920 Schleiden Castle was sold to the Order of the Lazarists. The old count's residence burned down completely during the Second World War, but was rebuilt and is now privately owned. eifel.de/go/sehenswertes-detail/schloss_schleiden.html
