The Cyclops Stones consist of ancient sand that accumulated at the bottom of the Cretaceous Sea several million years ago. When the sea retreated, the sand layer was exposed. In some places the quartz in the sand was dissolved by tropical rain and seeped into deeper layers of soil, where it cemented into hard sandstone and quartz beds - today's Cyclops stones. Over the course of millions of years, they have come back to the surface due to environmental influences.

The Cyclops Stones are easily accessible and worth a visit. When these emerge from the forest floor there is something “extraterrestrial” or “mystical” and the name in connection with Cyclops does the rest. The true origins, which are explained in pictures on boards there, are also fascinating.

The approx. fifty stone blocks are spread over an area of a good one hectare, mainly in the area of the Belgian municipality of Raeren. The largest of the cyclopean stones protrudes from the earth with about 20 cubic meters.

Cyclopean stones can be found spread over approx. 1 hectare. Due to the sparse forest, the spot is well suited for picnics/forest games or climbing fun for children from around 8 to 12 years old.

Description

The blocks of different sizes consist mainly of silicified sand. The natural monument is located mostly just a few meters south of the border between Germany and Belgium in the Belgian municipality of Raeren and is divided by the Aachener Landgraben. However, some of the Cyclopean stones can be found on German soil.

The starting material for the formation of the Cyclopean stones was unconsolidated Upper Cretaceous sand, the so-called Aachen sand, which is widespread in the area of the Aachen Forest and was previously mined in numerous sand pits, such as the Flög sand pit in Hauset. The Aachen sand was deposited in the Santonian in the area of a shallow sea 85 to 84 million years ago. The tropical climatic conditions during the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary led to a near-surface dissolution of quartz from the Cretaceous sands by penetrating precipitation water.
