This is where three students drowned in a ferry accident on their way back from Kunitzburg in 1829. The pastor, who had just come into office, pushed through the construction of a bridge. An information board on the bridge tells the whole story. We put the photo of the board in the highlight on the other side of the bridge, here it would be the 194th (of often similar photo motifs). The pastor's restored gravestone stands in the Kunitz cemetery.

But what is also interesting: one of the drowned students was a brother of the architect Gottfried Semper (Semperoper). The latter designed the gravestone for the students in the old cemetery right next to the church in Golmsdorf. It still stands today, an early work of the famous architect, so to speak.

Until 1832 there was no bridge over the Saale in Kunitz. Anyone who wanted to cross the river at this point and not go to the next bridge in Dorndorf had to rely on the ferry, which was evidently a risky means of transport at that time, as there are reports of numerous accidents with fatal outcomes, such as the one on April 4, 1829, when a Saale ferry crashed with seven students who wanted to return to Jena after visiting Kunitzburg. Three of them drowned and were buried in Golmsdorf, a young man from Altona named Semper.

A few weeks after this accident, a new pastor, Mag. Chr. Daniel Gottlob Schillbach, came to Kunitz. He took on the untenable situation at the Kunitz Saale crossing and pushed for the construction of the bridge that had already been planned.

In the autumn of 1829, the merchant Karl Semper from Altona, the brother of one of the drowned students, visited the scene of the accident and wanted to erect a memorial to the dead man.

I had only seen the bridge from the water - it is absolutely worth seeing there (paddling tour). Now I have stepped onto it to cross the Saale. What a beautiful experience. Thank you to everyone who got involved - a really successful work that is definitely worth seeing.

And anyone who, like us, hikes back from Dornburg to Jena... will be delighted to cross the Saale in such a wonderful way. A beautiful piece of land.

And Goethe was supposedly inspired to create his Erlkönig here in this valley... it is possible.
