"The NSG Vorster Feld represents a typical Niers floodplain and lowland area with natural small bodies of water, extensive wet meadows, reedbeds, sedge meadows, marsh and riparian forest, embedded in a complex of partly extensively used mesophilic grassland, smaller deciduous forests and numerous small trees. This The surrounding area is formed by the straightened course of the Niers river, arable land and mostly more intensively used grassland areas. About a third of the area is taken up by the above-mentioned typical floodplain landscape elements, in particular the species-rich and extensive wet meadows have become very rare in the wider area. Also worth mentioning are extensive reed areas in the area of three larger and small, near-natural still waters in the north of the area. Particularly in the areas far from the river, the wet meadows are replaced by mesophilic, fresh to slightly moist cattle pastures and hay meadows. Several, sometimes quite wide, ditches run through the lowland, in which fen and gley soils predominate . The ditches mostly have reed banks and sometimes dense, species-rich still water vegetation. Numerous rows of (top) trees, a grazed group of English oaks and individual trees, mostly old and some with tree hollows, structure the well-preserved river meadow landscape typical of the Lower Rhine. Another third in the north, west and east of the area is occupied by structurally rich mixed deciduous forest complexes, mostly made of English oak, birch, alder and ash, and partly also by hybrid poplar stands, some of which are very wet. The most important development goals are to further promote the development of swamp and floodplain forests by converting hybrid poplar stands, as well as further extensification of mesophilic grassland areas. The biotope is of outstanding importance for the biotope network as a particularly structurally rich section of the Niers lowlands in the predominantly intensively agricultural environment."
