The Flintbeker Sichel is the largest excavated death site in Europe. The sickle extends over a length of 4 kilometers and a width of 0.5 kilometers between Groß- and Kleinflintbek on the edge of the two moors of Fehltmoor and Kleinflintbeker Moor.
The existence of burial mounds was mentioned as early as the mid-19th century, but the Flintbeker sickle remained unknown until the 1970s, despite investigations in the 1940s. The picture only changed with the archaeological survey of the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde. Through systematic inspections in the Flintbeker field marks on the basis of older records of the municipal area by G. Busch, the continuous line of finds consisting of at least 65 burial mounds was determined. In 1976 the excavation work began under Dieter Stoltenberg and his excavation team, which lasted a total of twenty years. Among other things, the oldest track of a wheeled vehicle from the 4th millennium BC, hook plow tracks from the time from 1700 BC. to 1000 BC and the grave finds of the so-called "Ilmenau woman" from the 15th century BC.
Today, the entire excavation area has been leveled and is used for agriculture again. At the Christianruh residential area in the direction of Meimersdorf there is a memorial stone with a bronze plaque that was donated in 1994 by the Flintbek Beautification Association. The finds of the Flintbeker sickle are presented by the Kultur- und Beautification Association Flintbek e. V. managed and maintained. There is a model of the sickle in the entrance area of the Flintbek town hall (Heitmannskamp 2, 24220 Flintbek).
