Beautiful rock formations made of red sandstone. The red sandstone cliffs in the Rur Valley have been under nature protection since 1999. Eagle owls have been breeding here again for some time. Every year the eagle owls are counted in the rocks of the Rur valley and the young are ringed. In 2017, five uhu pairs were able to raise ten cubs in the Rur Valley. The Buntsandstein route begins at Kreuzau station, leaves the local area and runs through the Ruraue to Üdingen. There the path gradually rises, so that the impressive panorama of the Obermaubach reservoir can be enjoyed on the Mausauel. Over the Eugenienstein and above the Rather rocks, the route finally reaches Nideggen on winding, near-natural paths through the Hindenburg gate and the rock group of Christinenley and will more than live up to your name Castle, then along the Effelsfelsen and through the cooling bush after evenings. Between evenings and Hausen, the edge of the Eifel National Park is touched for the first time and for the last 5 kilometers to Heimbach, only the Hausener bush stands in the way of the hikers. However, this was quickly climbed and the smallest city in NRW lures with gastronomic offers. From Heimbach the now increasing Buntsandstein route leads through the national park to the "Black Cross" on the Kermeter, from there to descend to the Urft dam and finally meet the Eifelsteig after a little more than 40 km. The Buntsandstein route is "accompanied" by the Rurtalbahn between Kreuzau and Heimbach. So hikers have the perfect opportunity to hike by train: You can start and end your individual hike at one of the 11 stops or interrupt it with a short train ride to get to your next stage on the Buntsandstein route.
