In front of the Cathedral of Santiago, in the Plaza del Obradoiro, you will see people crying, screaming, laughing, jumping and lying on the ground. You will see groups taking photos everywhere and celebrating (or mourning) the end of their experience on the Camino de Santiago.
Every day this place brings together people who come from all over the world on pilgrimage.
The cathedral is in the Gothic style, although the current façade has many neo-Gothic elements.
One of its best-known symbols is the botafumeiro. It is an immense silver censer that hangs from the ceiling inside the cathedral and is swung for solemn masses. Quite a spectacle.
Three other majestic buildings frame the square: Rajoy's palace, where the town hall is located, the Parador de Santiago and the rectorate of the university.

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the most outstanding work of Romanesque art in Spain. The Plaza del Obradoiro is the monumental center of Santiago de Compostela. Its Galician name seems to derive from the stonemasons' workshops that worked on the construction of the baroque façade of the Cathedral, which dominates the square and welcomes the thousands of pilgrims who arrive along the Camino de Santiago.
