    A small natural paradise near Elmshorn. You are under sea level there. Above the lime pit there are several viewpoints with a view into the pit. Very interesting and worth seeing.

      The former mining pit for fertilizer lime is now protected as a nature reserve and national geotope and is looked after by the Community for the Preservation of Cultural Property in Tornesch.
      The lime pit offers unique geoscientific treasures and a habitat for rare plants and animals.
      In the Liether Kalkgrube the oldest geological rock layers of the North German lowlands are exposed. The layers that are otherwise to be found at a depth of approx. 6 to 7 km have risen here as part of a salt dome to the surface of the earth today.
      The Liether Kalkgrube is open to the public all year round as a local recreation area. Please note the general rules for nature reserves. The starting point for activities is the parking lot in the pit entrance area.

                    The Liether Kalkgrube is a former open-cast mine where limestone was mined. The Kalkgrube is geologically very interesting because the oldest rock layers in northern Germany come to the surface here. These layers were formed around 250 million years ago, in the Permian period. They consist mainly of limestone, claystone and sandstone.
