Exciting castle ruins and great vantage point on the area. Parts of the castle date back to the 12th century. Especially the 25 meter wide shield wall and the pentagonal keep are especially. During the Palatinate War of Succession Burg Hohenecken was blown up and has since been a ruin.

This impressive example of Staufian architecture is visible from afar and is located on the spur at the end of a mountain ridge. The ruins, consisting of the upper and lower castles, measure 50 by 90 metres, including the moat and ditch. The steep path to the castle leads from the town centre past the Rochus Chapel through an old tree population up to an extensive castle plateau on the 376-metre-high castle hill. Although the fortifications and residential complex were destroyed by the French in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession, considerable parts have survived to this day: the mighty, 25-metre-wide and 11-metre-high shield wall with the remains of the pentagonal keep behind it are particularly impressive.
A visit to the castle is worthwhile

Many trails, both stroller friendly and not at all, run to and around the Hoheneken castle ruins. The views are gorgeous. There is play ground near by. Also a private pasture where you can encounter interesting breed of goats (Boargoat).
There are nit documented data on when the Castle was build. In the first half of the 13th century the castle was enfeoffed to a Kaiserslautern family of ministeriales, the descendants of Reinhard of Lautern, the knight. In 1214, they were awarded the right of patronage of Ramstein by the king, Frederick II, who would later become emperor. From then on the castle's owners called themselves von Hohenecken.
At the beginning of the early modern period, Hohenecken Castle went into decline. In the German Peasants' War of 1525 it was captured by rebellious peasants. In 1668 there was a lengthy siege by Prince-Elector Charles Louis of the Palatinate, which ended in the partial destruction of the castle. In 1689, during the War of the Palatine Succession, the castle was blown up by French troops.

The castle is still well preserved. For hikers, a narrow footpath (also called Ritter Reinhard Weg) leads to the Rochus Church and the Schützenhaus up to the castle. Adjacent is a wooded area with a nice children's playground. You can also see a lot of mountain bikers here who approach the castle through the forest

The restoration work on the ruins has revealed many things. Very beautiful castle complex 👍

                        History

The exact date of the castle's foundation is not known. While older literature often assumes that it was built directly after the new Barbarossa Castle in Kaiserslautern (1156), more recent findings suggest that construction began 50 years later. The five-sided keep and the massive shield wall in particular suggest that it was built around 1200.

In the first half of the 13th century, the castle was given as a fief to a Kaiserslautern ministerial family. They were the descendants of the knight Reinhard von Lautern, who had been gifted the right of patronage to Ramstein in 1214 by the king and later emperor Frederick II. From then on, the castle administrators called themselves von Hohenecken. The castle was part of a lordship that extended over several settlements: the valley community of Hohenecken, which was built at the foot of the castle hill, as well as Erfenbach, Espensteig, Siegelbach and Stockweiler, today Stockborn. All of them now belong to the city of Kaiserslautern. Even after centuries, the castle and the lordship were still considered imperial fiefdoms.

With the beginning of the modern era, Hohenecken Castle began to decline. During the Peasants' War (1525), it was taken by rebellious peasants. In 1668, there was a long siege by Elector Karl Ludwig of the Palatinate, which ended with the partial destruction of the castle. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, it was finally blown up by French troops in 1689. The ruins, including the moat, moat, upper and lower castle, measure approximately 50 m by 90 m. It has a mighty shield wall (25 m wide, 11 m high) and a pentagonal keep. Experts consider the castle to be one of the most interesting castles of the Staufer period. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and offers a wide view.

You enter the ruins from the northeast side through a trench-like path. A towering sandstone rock wall forms the northeast end of the castle complex. At the end of the path, on the right, is the castle gate with a coat of arms and the year 1560 carved into it. This honors the creation of the younger lower castle / outer castle, which you enter through the archway. Structural remains from the interior of the lower castle / outer castle are no longer there. On the left side, the foundations and a gable-side wall of the servants' house / stable / service building are visible. A seating area consisting of benches and tables is set up within the foundations. On the inside of the rock barrier you pass through, right next to the castle gate, you can see a rock chamber that once served as a former guardhouse.
From the open area of the lower castle you can look up to the older upper castle. The most striking features are the 25-meter-high shield wall and the ruins of the 34-meter-high keep. An extensive information board with detailed explanations is set up on the left corner of the shield wall. On the left (southern) side of the upper castle there is a two-flight staircase that leads into the interior of the complex. Several foundation and wall remains indicate extensive and high-rise buildings. On the left, in the southwest area, the walls of living and kitchen buildings rise three stories high. Opposite, the ruins of the keep dominate. In the middle is the foundation of a Renaissance stair tower. To the right of the keep, the replica of a well surround is visible.
Leaving the ruins, the path leads back to the center of the village, past a recent and intact well. A few meters above, relics of a much older well house are visible. Water seeps out of the sandstone layers, which suggests a layered spring to supply the castle residents. A worthwhile excursion.

Every two years, the Hohenecken Castle Friends Association organizes a summer festival at Hohenecken Castle. This year (2019) it's that time again.
The castle will be celebrating on August 9th - 11th, 2019.
It starts on Friday with a hearty rock concert by students and former students of the private Pagadini music school in Hohenecken. On Saturday and Sunday there are castle tours, children's entertainment, a bird of prey show, a petting zoo, food and drink and musical performances by various groups. From Irish folk to big band sound.
