The ruins of the former Brandenfels high castle stand high on the southern Ringgau in Hesse. Built in the middle of the 13th century, today only a few remains can be found above Markershausen, a district of the northern Hessian municipality of Herleshausen.
Entering the castle ruins is prohibited due to the risk of collapse!
The castle ruins can be reached from the state road 3243. From the junction of the L 3247 Netra – Altefeld you drive on the L 3243 in the direction of Holzhausen and turn in a 180 ° right curve into an unpaved forest path (with barrier). From there, drive straight ahead over the next forest path junction and turn right 200 m later into a smaller, ascending forest path, marked as Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen (X5H).
Follow this path for about 1,000 m to the ruin. Always keep to the left!
There is another access path, which I recommend for the descent and which is very steep (approx. 100 m) and requires good driving skills.
