An existing chapel was elevated to a parish church in 1124. Around 1254 a new church was built which has undergone all kinds of destruction and rebuilding. In 1845 the church was considerably enlarged after a design by Ferdinand Berckmans. The originally 17th-century choir was preserved. In 1940 the church was heavily damaged by war. In 1953-1954 the church was rebuilt according to a design by Leo De Graef, while the outer walls still standing were spared.

Saint Gertrude's Church. A few years ago, it was the film set for the recordings of the television series "Als de dijkenbreken". This series showed what happens to parts of Belgium, the Dutch Randstad and Zeeland when the dikes break due to a major storm and the entire area is flooded. The church pews had to disappear to convert the church into a shelter for the victims of the flood disaster. In the cemetery at the intersection of De Keyserhoeve and Noordland, you will find the Saint Gertrude's Well. The design was inspired by the Quinten Matsijsputteke on the Antwerp Handschoenmarkt.
