    When the weather is nice, the jetty can be used as a picnic area. But there is also covered seating on both sides of the lake.

              The well-signposted “Hühnenteich” circular route is worthwhile in every season. I enjoy watching the changes in nature and in the small pond at different times of the year. And with its around 6km length, this hiking trail is easy to master even for most hobby hikers.

                              The Hünenteich, a dammed sinkhole, is a unique feature of the Hainich and one of the few standing bodies of water in the region. The Hünenteich is an important habitat: In early summer, the magnificent, pale yellow flowers of the water iris appear along the banks. Alpine newts and other amphibians use the Hünenteich as a spawning ground. Fragrant water mint lines the shoreline.
