São Gonçalo is said to have been born here in 1360. He is the patron saint of the fishermen of Lagos (incidentally, the only place in Portugal where São Pedro Telmo is not the patron saint of the fishermen, as is the case everywhere else). The saint died on October 15, 1422 in Torres Vedras.
According to tradition, São Gonçalo was born in a house next to the Portas do Mar city gate, where a niche with a statue commemorates the saint today. At the end of the 14th century, he joined the order of the Augustinian Hermits. As a man with many interests, he devoted himself primarily to catechism and preaching. He performed a number of miracles; one of the most famous is probably the "multiplication of tuna".
Since 1972, São Golçalo has been the patron saint of the city, which celebrates its city holiday in his honor on October 27. The house altar was built in the 1940s at the instigation of some Lagos personalities to preserve the memory of the saint. visitportugal.com
