Impressive, large castle ruins on a rock above the Aar valley. Built as the residence of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen. It is freely accessible from April to September. Coming from the lower village, an incredibly steep road leads up here.

🏰 Hohenstein Castle – History, Views & Departure

The ruins of Hohenstein Castle rise majestically above the Aar Valley – a place steeped in history and atmosphere. First mentioned in the 12th century, it served as a border fortress, court, and administrative seat of the Counts of Nassau for centuries. Later, it fell into ruin – but never forgotten.

After decades of decay, a breath of fresh air is once again blowing through the old walls: The castle has been gradually renovated over the past few years and opened to the public. Cultural events, guided tours, and a planned reopening as a tourist destination are revitalizing the monument.

🚴‍♂️ Cyclists and hikers will find a short detour up there worthwhile – the view of the Aar Valley and the fortified silhouette are magnificent. If you want to experience history, this is the place for you.
