        The Torre de Fornells is one of over 160 defensive towers that the British Empire built in the western Mediterranean, primarily against French opponents.
        It is considered the most important defense tower on Menorca.
        After its last restoration, a small museum was set up in 2000.

The name "Martello tower" goes back to a Genoese tower on Cape Mortella (Pointe Mortella) in Corsica, which is named after the myrtles that grow there (Corsican: la mortella). Martello is a corruption of the word "mortella". In February 1794, the British needed three days of shelling from the sea before the 38-strong crew of the tower at Mortella surrendered after a storm attack from land.
