The visitor center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on December 25 and January 1. It is open on public holidays in the host country. During opening hours, a member of staff is on duty in the visitor building to answer questions and accompany relatives.

Historical interpretation:

The Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery was founded in September 1944 and served as a temporary cemetery for the fallen of the fighting during the winter of 1944-45 in Belgium and Germany. These were the Battle of Aachen, the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge (also called the Battle of the Bulge).

In March 1945, 17,000 Americans, 191 Allies and 10,300 Germans were buried at the Henri-Chapelle Cemetery.

After the war, the German and Allied victims were transferred to other places. About 60% of the American war dead were repatriated at the wishes of their relatives. After the reconstruction, the new and permanent American Cemetery and Monument was inaugurated by General Eisenhower in 1960.

The cemetery is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), an agency of the US government. However, the land is NOT considered US territory.

As a memorial to the many war dead, such places - sometimes referred to as "cemeteries of honor" - are still very important today. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said..." says the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke's Gospel, Chapter 2, Verse 29). However, the many people buried here did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and an inhuman tyranny.

The most important and everlasting function of military or honorary cemeteries or war graves is therefore to remember this and to remind each generation anew of the need to maintain lasting peace.
