It is located on the southern edge of the Batizovská valley (Botzdorfer Tal in German) and its altitude is 1884 m a.s.l. Its area is 34,775 m², it measures 288 × 160 m and is up to 10.5 m deep. The Batizovský creek (German Botzdorfer Bach), a left-hand tributary of the Velický creek in the catchment area of the Poprad, flows through the lake.

The lake took the name of the valley and is named after the place Batizovce, which in turn was named after the medieval comes Batyz.
