Katzenstein Castle is a bit hidden because it was not built on a hill but more on a hillside. A magnificent sight captivates the visitor as soon as he reaches the place Katzenstein with its castle.

The castle still contains significant parts, but some buildings were reconstructed in the 1960s. You reach the castle via a large spacious Wirtshaftshof, which was separated from the main castle by a moat.

The gate is located in the so-called new castle, through which one enters the courtyard. He is surrounded by fortified walls and the new castle. An intermediate wall separates the former Hohenstaufen castle from the "newer castle". After a passage in this intermediate wall you are in front of the former Palas. Its upper floor was reconstructed in the 1960s. Around the middle of this second courtyard, remains of the wall from the 11th century were uncovered.

Here is now the entrance to the keep, with still preserved fireplace and the new castle with the important castle chapel.

In the magnificently preserved castle today beside the donjon also find a museum, in which you can inform you about the history of the castle, as well as a friendly Burgschänke.

The castle is open from 01 March to 31 December. From March to May and from mid-September to the end of October, the castle is closed on Mondays. In November and December, the castle is only open on weekends and public holidays.

Katzenstein is a very interesting castle. Entry costs € 5, which includes a food voucher. Guided tours are offered several times a day. If you want to climb the tower, be careful. It is relatively dark and the stairs are very, very steep. Also you should always pull your head in a bit otherwise there are dents.
Today there were maids dressed as maids and a little girl dressed as a queen. You had to bow to the queen if you wanted to climb the tower. Very funny. The consumption voucher can be redeemed in the cloister below.

A few meters from Katzenstein is the Härtsfeldsee. There is a Metal Open Air every June.

Seldom seen such a cool castle. It's privately owned and you can actually walk around alone inside. It's really worth a trip.

Great castle in very good condition. We particularly liked the fact that you can also explore some of the sometimes winding interiors via creaking floorboards and stairs.
Keep, staufersaal, Brunnenstube, chapel, a treasure ... nothing is missing to take you back in time. In addition, beautifully designed information panels everywhere.
The entrance is worth it.

Katzenstein Castle is a pretty little castle that can also be visited.
You often only notice it when you drive right next to it on the street in the village, but it is a little gem.

The last section of the circular route (clockwise) coming from Katzenstein Castle is on the busy road along the L 2033 to the south. The new walking path on the dam at Härtsfeldsee to the parking lot at the lake is much nicer and just as long. To do this, walk west along the L 2033 for a few meters and then switch to the Dammweg! This causeway runs about 60 m away and parallel to the recommended route.
