This is not just any observatory, this is the location of the Hainberg astrograph. Karl Schwarzschild and Ejnar Hertzsprung, among others, have researched here. History of science was written here.

Nowadays this area is lovingly looked after by the Amateur Astronomical Association Göttingen e.V. This also includes the possibility of public tours. Dates and lots of interesting information can be found at avgoe.de. It is worth it!

A new observatory had been built on the Hainberg above the city as the third Göttingen observatory since 1929; first the astrograph for the photometry of star clusters, then in the early forties the solar tower with a coelostat and spectrograph for investigations of the solar spectrum.

The astrograph is a few hundred meters away.

Until the early sixties, when the Hainberg observatory was given up in favor of the new Göttingen solar observatory in Ticino above Locarno, the observatory on the Hainberg was an astronomical research center of international importance.
