The building, popularly known as the "White Temple", was formerly called the "Ernst Ludwig Umbrella". It was named after its builder, Grand Duke Ludwig III, who had it built around 1850. A forest festival is celebrated around the striking pavilion at Pentecost. It is also a popular tourist destination and serves as a point of orientation: the square-patterned corridors in the sprawling "Koberstadt" look very similar.

Grand Duke Ludwig III (1806 - 77) was not one of the most prominent representatives of the House of Hesse. Although he was called upon to rule in stormy times (the 1848 Revolution), he left no deep traces on a political level. Nor did he indulge in sensational architecture, like others from the Darmstadt ruling house before him. In this sense, the small rest area in the forest is a fitting place to commemorate a man who spent the last years of his life in great seclusion.

The current construction in the forest west of Egelsbach is not the original building. Storms severely damaged the umbrella-like construction. In 1906 it was replaced by the much more stable "White Temple". It owes its name to an original white paint job. This has long since disappeared, of course.

It is not easy to understand why Ludwig III chose that particular spot for the pavilion. The intersection of Höllschneise and Langer Steinkautschneise looks like countless other forest crossings. What is clear, however, is what the Koberstadt Forest is all about. It is littered with mighty burial mounds. The finds from the Hallstatt period were so impressive that the entire regional culture was nicknamed "Koberstadt culture". The word Koberstadt, by the way, gives a clue as to why the archaeologists made such remarkable discoveries there: Kober stands for copper. Anyone who smelted ore here was rich.
