The history of the monastery begins around 1100. Benigna von Daun, a noble lady from the Eifel region, founds a monastic settlement on the courtyard that has fallen to her as a widow's estate. Her son Richard becomes the first abbot. He chooses the Rule of St. Augustine as the basis of the community called the Augustinian canons.
In 1121 the foundation stone was laid for a first stone church. Springiersbach quickly developed into an important scientific and intellectual center. After Richard's death (1158), the history of the Springiersbacher Stift was shaped over centuries by the alternation between attempts at reform and decay.
In 1769 the old and probably dilapidated Romanesque basilica with three naves was demolished and a new baroque and rococo church was built. But already 30 years later (1802) the church and monastery were secularized. In order to save the almost new church from demolition, the Trier bishop raised it to the parish church of Bengel.
100 years later (1902) the parish of Bengel builds its own church. The Springiersbach monastery church remained unused until 1922. This year the Upper German Province of the Carmelites based in Bamberg founded a small convent in Springiersbach.
Today's Springiersbach monastery church is known far beyond its borders for its rich baroque furnishings. Based on archaeological evidence and some rediscovered, ornate architectural parts (unique in late Romanesque sculpture), we can rightly say that the predecessor church in the Rhine and Moselle regions was one of the most important church buildings of the 12th and 13th centuries.
