HISTORY OF THE SWISS ABROAD SQUARE
(known in Brunnen as Wehrihaggen)
The former headland was filled over decades to create a magnificent meeting place.

In 1856, Fridolin Fassbind, then the innkeeper, began buying a series of gardens between Leewasser and the lake shore in the direction of “Wehrihaggen”. In 1870, he built the “Waldstätterhof” hotel on the part of this land near the village. In December 1905, Fassbind bought the “Wehrihaggen” (harbor pier with a shallow water area facing inland) from the Schwyz district at auction. Filling began in 1906, and the entire area facing the lake had to be provided with a strong retaining wall. A conference hall was planned for the gradually emerging square. The “Wehrihaggen” then remained the property of the “Waldstätterhof” hotel until the 700th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation. At that time it was purchased by the “Stiftung Auslanderschweizerplatz”.

Around 750,000 Swiss people live abroad, and this place right on Lake Lucerne is intended to symbolize their connection to their homeland. In May 1991, the place for the Swiss abroad was opened to the public by Federal Councilor Jean-Pascal Delamuraz.
