The Elsensee is located to the east of the Kagel-Möllensee settlement on the state road 232, which leads via Lichtenow to Rehfelde and north of Kagel crosses the federal roads 1 and 5, which combine here. To the east follows the Baberowsee, which is connected to the Elsensee via a ditch. In the south-west, after the village of Möllensee, is the Möllensee of the same name, which forms the first link in the three-part Grünheide chain of lakes. This chain of lakes has no connection to the Elsensee or the Kagel chain of lakes and drains to the southwest into the Neue Löcknitz (Löcknitz Canal). A bungalow settlement (dachas) takes up around three quarters of the shore. Not far from the north bank is the now closed (as of 2012) youth education and recreation center Kagel[3] of the Berlin district office Mitte. The lake is extensively surrounded by forest, which reaches the shore in some uninhabited areas. Northeast follows a moor area that extends to Baberowsee. At the southern tip there is a bathing area with a beach.
