The parish church of St. Marien zu Güstrow (and, surprisingly, not the castle or the cathedral) forms, with the town hall at the back, the geographical center of the old and pretty town, which fortunately has not yet been overrun by tourists!
The church was first mentioned in 1308. 1503 burned but was down by a lightning strike, in 1508, the newly built church with main altar and 17 side altars was re-opened.
In 1522, the Güstrower Katharinenbruderschaft donated the famous late Gothic Brussels altar, which is the main attraction of the church: The carvings are by Jan Borman, the paintings were (as falsely also on Wikipedia read) formerly assigned to the Brussels painter Bernaert van Orley A. Wauters (1893) was justified by the lower quality of the paintings in Güstrow compared to Orley's complete works and the coarser quality of the paintings. However, the work is assigned to the school or workshop Bernard van Orleys.
The reliefs on the front depict the scene of the crucifixion in the central shrine, the wings depict scenes from the life and passion of Christ, and the predella shows Christ with 12 apostles. The essay shows Jesus, Mary and twelve female saints. On the backs they are visible represent Mary, the Annunciation as well as St. Catherine. When closed, the apostles Peter and Paul become visible.
From 1880 to 1883 followed a comprehensive reconstruction of the building along with thorough restoration, this resulted in three equally tall ships, which probably correspond more to the original plan than hall church, yet the original shape is no longer preserved. Also recent is the organ (1931).
