The Prado National Museum, which celebrated its bicentennial in 2019, presides over one of the most visited tourist itineraries in the capital: the Paseo del Arte. In addition to Velázquez's Las Meninas and Goya's The Executions of May 3, in its rooms you can see masterpieces of the Spanish, Italian and Flemish schools. The Prado has a valuable collection of 8,600 paintings and more than 700 sculptures. It is advisable to consult a guide and prepare the visit before entering the museum.

You need more than 1 day to see the entire Museo del Prado: around six thousand paintings and sculptures are on display.

The collection consists largely of work by Italian, Flemish and Spanish masters, including the beautiful Las Meninas by Velazquez. You will also find works of art by other big names such as Goya, El Greco, Rubens, Hieronymus Bosch and Rembrandt.

Unfortunately, it is not allowed to take photos of the works of art.

You can get an audio guide for 5 euros. Here you can follow a route that takes you past the most important works. You can choose from: a 1-hour, 2-hour or 3-hour tour.

Over 230 years ago, King Charles III commissioned the architect Juan de Villanueva to design the noble building of the Museo Nacional del Prado, which, however, only began operating as a museum in 1819. Today, it is one of the world's most important art museums and is therefore without question one of our top 15 Spanish attractions. Several thousand works of art, drawings, sculptures, and even coins have been collected here over the years and are on display in this magnificent building. Of particular note are the works of art by famous painters from Spain, as well as from the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany, who have enjoyed world renown for centuries.
