Dating back to the 16th century, the magnificent Saddell Castle hides a turbulent past, having been home to various members of the MacDonald clan.
The castle was built between 1508 - 1512 using stones from the ruined Saddell Abbey nearby. The MacDonald lords took over the castle from the Earl of Arran and made some alterations. For example, a trap door was added to the main entrance passage. When opened, it would send a poor soul to dungeons from which there was no exit!
From the end of the 18th century, the castle began to decay and fell into disrepair. Today, the castle is managed by Landmark Trust who rent it out as a self-catering property. You may recognise the castle from the video to Paul McCartney's song Mull of Kintyre.
