Outside of Lagoudera you can visit one of the most famous barn roof churches in Cyprus. The adjacent monastery was founded in 1192. The frescoes also date from this period. Shoulders and knees must be covered when entering the church, but towels can be borrowed at the entrance.

Just outside the small Troodos village of Lagouderá is the former monastery church "Panagía tou Araká", a church of the Mother of God; "Araka" is interpreted as "pea" in the German guides: just as there is a spurge Mother of God ("Phorbiotissa") in Asinou, there would be a "pea Mother of God" here. In the "world heritage" the name is derived from "ierakas", hawk, because according to local legend the founder of the monastery was led to the hidden icon of Mary by this bird.

According to the donor inscription, the monastery was founded in 1192, a year after Richard the Lionheart conquered Cyprus. The painting dates from this period, according to Schneider: "The most complete fresco cycle of the middle Byzantine period on Cyprus." As a stylistic feature of this time, even the layman will notice the enormous lengthening of the figures. The "World Heritage" names Theodoros Apsevdis as the probable painter.

Photography is prohibited in the church. So I don't have any interior shots. The reason is not religious, but conservative. Most visitors cannot control the flash on their camera.
