The Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal (also known as the Ludwig Canal or regional "Old Canal") was a 172.4 km long waterway between the Danube near Kelheim and the Main near Bamberg in the 19th and 20th centuries. In a broader sense, the canal built between 1836 and 1846 was part of a navigable connection between the North Sea near Rotterdam and the Black Sea near Constanta. By crossing the European main watershed, the ambitious construction project took on a special position. 100 locks, some in the rivers Altmühl and Regnitz, mastered a total height difference of 264 meters (80 m ascent from the Danube and 184 m descent to the Main). The historical successor to the canal, which was closed in 1950, is the Main-Danube Canal, which was built between 1960 and 1992. Between Beilngries and Nuremberg, the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal is largely preserved in its historical scope and with some functions.

The order of the locks in the list depends on the mileage from the beginning at Kelheim to the end in Bamberg. The basis of the list is the BayernAtlas and its historical maps. Originally there were 100 locks along the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal. There were 32 locks between the beginning at Kelheim and the Vertex attitude and 68 locks between the Vertex attitude and Bamberg. Column 1 is used for consecutive numbering. In column 2, historical images or current photographs are shown, if available. Column 3 provides information about the current situation of the lock property. Column 4 contains the current mileage and column 5 the distance between the described locks, also referred to as “attitude”. In column 6, if it can be determined, the head is stated, i.e. the original average height difference between the upper and lower water of the canal. Column 7 gives the height above sea level, column 8 contains information about the monument, number 9 contains the coordinates of the lock and numbers 10 and 11 contain links to the locations.
