The crypt chapel of the Salm-Salm noble family, not far from the German-Dutch border, invites you to take a short break.

You can tell that it is a beautiful historic building even when you drive past it. I found it interesting that the chapel was a Catholic church for the Protestant Dutch people in the border region.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to visit the Holy Cross Chapel in Anholt, the burial place of the Princely House of Salm, but photos through the fence were possible.
The first royal burials took place in 1813. In that year, coffins of the ancestors were transferred here from the Anholt parish church of St. Pankratius.

The complex is located not far from the German-Dutch border on the chapel dike in the Anholt farming community of Regniet and forms the point de vue of an avenue leading from Anholt to it as part of a landscape architecture. The middle of the complex consists of a hexagonal central building with a baroque vaulted, slate-covered onion roof, crowned by a lantern that reproduces the basic shape of the chapel in miniature. The building is made of brick with leaded glazed segmental arched windows, plastered in incised ashlar and painted in a cream tone.

A very beautiful little chapel by the roadside.
The chapel can be seen from afar, and there's also an opportunity to take a short break in the area.

The Princely Crypt Chapel, also known as the Regniet Cross Chapel, is a princely crypt in Isselburg-Anholt. Built in 1672 as a mission station for Catholics from the Achterhoek region, it has served the German noble family Salm-Salm, a branch of the imperial princely House of Salm, as a hereditary burial place, tomb, and mausoleum since 1813. The listed building is privately owned by the princely house.

The chapel is located near the public road and can be seen from the road.

As early as 1461, a wooden cross stood here, serving as a place of worship for pilgrims and worshippers.

REFORMATION-COUNTER-REFORMATION: Prince Carl Theodor Otto zu Salm had the hexagonal chapel built between 1669 and 1672. Like many places in the Westphalian border region, the Regnieter Kreuzkapelle was intended to give Dutch border residents the opportunity to participate in Catholic services, as this was no longer permitted in their country. Since the Reformation in 1517, the family of the Lords of Anholt, the Counts of Bronckhorst-Batenburg, adhered to the Catholic faith. However, those of other faiths were accepted. It is known that Protestant Christians have lived in Anholt for around 400 years.

CONSTRUCTION: With its hexagonal floor plan, to which the portal and chancel adjoin, the entire building has the shape of a cross. The chapel, built in the Westphalian Baroque style, has a domed onion dome with a lantern at the top. The entrance is formed by an archway with a double wooden door. Above the archway, a relief depicting the Salm coat of arms, framed by a collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, serves as the overdoor. In 1675, the prince founded the Vicary of St. Cross and St. Anthony. Prince Nikolaus Leopold zu Salm-Salm and his wife, Princess Dorothea, appointed a special priest for the chapel to ensure that a mass would be held there every day. They also commissioned the Anholt sculptor Johann Theodor Nadorp to furnish the interior of the Chapel of the Cross with new furnishings. From 1811 to 1830, no services were held in the Regnieter Chapel. This also meant the cancellation of the three large, traditional processions to the Chapel of the Cross, which had taken place on: 1. the Monday of Pentecost, 2. the Sunday before Pentecost (Chapel Sunday), and 3. Good Friday. The Good Friday procession was reintroduced in 1839 by Pastor Breymann, as was the Corpus Christi procession on Chapel Sunday until 1890. CHAPEL AS BURIAL PLACE: During Napoleon's reign, from 1811 to 1830, no services were held in the Regnieter Cross Chapel. Due to a French burial decree of 1804, burials were no longer permitted in the crypt of the Anholt parish church of St. Pankratius. At the instigation of Prince Konstantin zu Salm-Salm, the Cross Chapel was then converted into a princely crypt chapel. All gravestones and coats of arms located in the parish church were moved to the Cross Chapel. In 1813, the surviving remains of the deceased princely family members were removed from the burial cellar beneath the choir of the parish church and transferred in a procession to the Regnieter Chapel.

During World War II, the building suffered considerable damage. It was restored in 1956 by Prince Nikolaus Leopold III. The most recent comprehensive renovation was commissioned by his grandson, Prince Emanuel, in 2017. Members of the princely family spanning five centuries and members of European princely houses, including representatives of royal and imperial families, rest on the grounds and in the chapel. NAPOLEONIC WARS: Following the Imperial Recess of 1803, Bocholt and Anholt were reorganized as "compensation lands" for the Prince of Salm-Kyrburg. Together with other princes, the Principality of Salm was founded, which entered into an alliance with France. With the establishment of the Confederation of the Rhine and the decline of the Holy Roman Empire, the Lordship of Anholt fell under the joint government of the Principality of Salm in 1806. In 1811, the Principality of Salm was annexed by the French Empire, and Anholt was incorporated into the French Empire as part of the Canton of Bocholt. (Source: Wikipedia)
