Fortifications are characteristic of a city. After the founding of the new town by Duke Ludwig I in 1218, it was secured, initially only with wooden palisades, ditches and earthen ramparts, but soon with stone walls, gates and towers. The city walls were necessary for the defense of the castle peace, the security of trade and the role as a sovereign base. The citizens had to pay taxes for the construction and maintenance of the city walls and were obliged to do military service, such as wall guards.
