The "monastery" is the "Abbey of the Reichstift Gandersheim". Of the extensive complex of the Gandersheim canonical monastery, founded in 852, only the collegiate church and the abbey buildings from the late 16th to 18th centuries are preserved today. They testify to the splendid court rulings in the monastery after the Reformation.

The building was erected in 1597 after the city fire in the Weser Renaissance style and has a baroque wing that houses the Emperor's Hall, which was furnished between 1726 and 1736. In front of the abbey is the Roswitha fountain - in memory of the famous poetess who gave the town its name. Today the abbey serves as the seat of the authorities.
