The castle is only open to the public for a few days during the Castle Festivities, the rest of the year it is not accessible to visitors.
The site itself is accessible to pedestrians, but not to cyclists.

Mheer Castle is a beautiful medieval castle located in the Limburg hills, in the village of Mheer (municipality of Eijsden-Margraten). Originally dating from the 14th century, it was later expanded and converted into a stately country house with a distinctive courtyard. The castle is privately owned and not open to the public, but it can be easily admired from the road. Surrounded by meadows and ancient trees, Mheer Castle is a picturesque part of the South Limburg landscape.

A "stone house" at this point was first mentioned in 1314. It was probably built long before, as the Mheer lords were mentioned as early as 1100. In the 14th century the castle went to the Van Imstenraedt family through marriage. The castle remained in this family until 1668, when it went to the De Loë family. You still own the castle.

Landgoed Altenbroek is also a beautiful area to visit. You can take a look here from Mheer via a nice walk and in the summer have a drink on the beautiful terrace.

The castle is surrounded by a dry moat with the access bridge on the south side. The four wings were built in different construction periods. The oldest part of the castle is the southeastern outer corner with the large round tower.

The cellar and the ground floor of the west wing probably belong to the 14th century stone house. The north wing was then built and later the east wing, which was connected to the large round tower. The south wing dates from the 17th century.

The overall appearance of the castle can be called picturesque with various (arkel) towers, bay windows, stepped gables and roofs. The castle has a lower floor/cellar with above it mostly two storeys with a roof. In some places there is only one storey. Due to large height differences on site, equal storeys can in principle differ greatly in height from each other.

The oldest parts of the castle are built of various types of natural stone, in the west wing for example broken stone on the field side and marl on the courtyard. After that, brick with natural stone was often used as a decorative/constructive element, such as bacon layers, corner pilasters and windows all around. The roofs are covered with slates.

The south facade, which functions as the front facade, has an irregular asymmetrical layout. On the left, a roof section with a gable and to the right of it, the entrance, which is designed as a slightly projecting bay window, in which there is a gate and ending in a tower shape. The east and north facades show a fairly regular layout with six and eight window axes respectively. The west facade is more irregular again with a lower section with a stepped gable and bay window on the southwest corner and a higher section next to it with a stepped gable with an arch tower.

The courtyard is terraced due to the height difference on site. Here, among other things, a half-open gallery and a stair tower are found, as well as a stately staircase-like access to the north wing.

The interior of the building reflects the construction history of partially implemented renovation and beautification plans.
