The meandering course of the Alster is very natural here, the path is easy to walk and well shaded when the sun is shining. There are hardly any people out and about on Mondays. Some dog owners like well-behaved animals.

The hike begins and ends at Gut Wulksfelde! Be sure to eat the Thuringian-style bratwurst!!! And shop in the farm shop! Delicious bread, good meat, everything you can eat!

The Alster hiking trail is one of the most popular walking routes in Hamburg. The path leads past Wilhelminian style villas and allotment gardens, floodplain meadows and parks from the city center far to the north of the Hanseatic city.

It is around 20 kilometers from the Binnenalster in the center to the Poppenbüttel lock in northern Hamburg, and along the way there are always surprising new perspectives on the river.

If you want to get to know this section of the Alster, you can also start from Poppenbüttel and head to the northern section of the Alster hiking trail. It first leads to the Mellingburg lock and from there to the Rodenbeker Quelle valley and to Wulksfelde. The route continues through a wooded landscape to Kayhude in Schleswig-Holstein, which is about ten kilometers away from the source of the Alster. From Kayhude a bus goes to the Ochsenzoll subway stop, from there it goes back towards the city center.
