The church is from the 13th century, although remains of an even older church, possibly from the 12th century, have been found near the north wall of the church after archaeological excavations.

During the Middle Ages, the church was expanded in stages. During the 14th century it was extended to the west and the southern tower was built, and in the 15th century the old chancel was replaced with a new one with high arches and Gothic windows. During this rebuilding, the church also got its crypt. Together with Lund Cathedral, Västra Ingelstad Church and Dalby Church, it is the only one in Skåne to have a crypt.

The most recent renovation took place in the late 19th century, when the floor was redone. For example, the tombstones on the church floor were moved out and placed along the church's outer walls. In the 1970s, they were taken down and moved to the crypt.
