The Ponte della Pia is a bridge of Roman origin, rebuilt in medieval times, which stands along the Strada Statale 73 Senese Aretina shortly after the town of Rosia in the municipality of Sovicille, just before the Castle of Montarrenti. Its name derives from a mysterious character called Pia in canto V of Purgatorio (130-136) in the Divine Comedy. The young Sienese aristocrat, who insinuates herself to be a Tolomei, and whose fate, surely bloody, still had to be questioned with scandal at Dante's time, is put in relationship with Nello d'Inghiramo Pannocchieschi, who boasted the ownership of Castel di Stone. This man, clearly linked to Siena, as his will shows, in order to marry Margherita Aldobrandeschi, was said to have thrown our Pia from the cliff known as the "jump of the countess" of his castle in Maremma. However, no evidence supports this thesis, suggested rather to confuse the waters, and followed for a long time, even in the nineteenth century, when it was believed to identify in a Pia Guastelloni, widow, in 1290, of Baldo d'Aldobrandino dei Tolomei the identity of the protagonist of history.
