The Susten Pass, located on main road 11, connects the cantons of Uri and Bern. The pass road is 45 km long and is one of the newer in the Swiss Alps. It was built between 1938 and 1945. Because it primarily serves tourism, it is generally only open from June to October. The road begins in Wassen on the northern slope of the Gotthard Pass and leads through the villages of Meien and Färnigen in the Meiental Valley, with a maximum gradient of 9 percent. A summit tunnel passes under the pass at 2,224 m. On the western slope in the Bernese Oberland, the descent continues past the Steingletscher, also at a 9 percent gradient, through the towns of Gadmen and Nessental in the Gadmertal Valley.
