I was surprised to find such an impressive church in such a small place: an impressive Romanesque portal, the two 65-meter-high towers, a baroque pulpit and a carved wood altar from the Middle Ages were my personal highlights.

The opening times are from May 15th to October 15th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Monday - Saturday). Climbing the tower is highly recommended: you have a great panoramic view. The entrance fee for the tower is 1€. The former tower keeper's apartment has been recreated in the towers, so you get a good insight into the life of the tower keeper.

St. Petri Church was originally built as a Romanesque basilica between 1170 and 1200. The magnificent Romanesque entrance portal, which is now located under the towers in the interior, also dates from this period. Between 1450 and 1490, St. Petri was converted into a Gothic hall church. This also resulted in the imposing 62-meter-high towers, which greet the country from a great distance in all directions. Inside the church, you can admire the baroque pulpit from 1710, the Lütkemüller organ from 1868 and the carved wood altar from the middle of the 15th century. A climb up the towers to the former tower keeper's apartment at a height of 45 meters offers a wonderful panoramic view of the town of Seehausen, the Elbe valley and the northern Altmark. Until 1958, and thus for over 270 years, the tower keepers and their families worked and lived at lofty heights in the towers of St. Petri. The St. Petri Friends Association has written an exciting brochure about it, which can be purchased in the church and at the tourist information office.

Definitely climb the tower if possible and the church is open. From the top you have a wonderful view of the city and the surrounding area. And if you're really lucky, you can also hear the organ playing. When we were there, the organist was playing the AveMaria... it's absolutely amazing, just fantastic to hear with the acoustics of the church.
