The monumental church of Saints Cosmo and Damian stands in an elevated position above the main square of Mendrisio. The building with a central floor plan was built between 1851 and 1875 according to plans by Luigi Fontana from Muggio. The octagonal dome is surmounted by a drum. In front of the façade there is a portico, above which the bell tower rises. Inside the church you can admire the magnificent tabernacle by Primo Lezzani from Mendrisio and Giovanni Gaffuri from Como (1670).
Diagonally opposite the church stands the medieval tower (12th century), in which a Latin inscription from the 2nd century is walled in: "P. V. DROMON T.F.I." (Publio Valerio Dromone orders in his will).

Erected on a promontory that makes it appear even more majestic, the current church was built in the neoclassical style to a design by Luigi Fontana in the years 1863–75. It is considered the most imposing ecclesiastical building in Ticino.
