Witnesses to Popular Piety
A characteristic feature of the Main-Franconian landscape are the wayside shrines. They are an expression of vibrant popular piety and bear witness to the craftsmanship and artistic creation of their time. Wayside shrines were erected after accidents, in times of war, plague, and other emergencies, as thanks for healing from illness or for help in times of need. Many also arose without any specific reason.
