On the "smuggler path", the experience of nature combines with living history. The “Smugglers' Path” is rightly named. Because in the past, especially in and after the war, coveted goods were smuggled over the “green border”. Customs officers patroled on both sides to catch smugglers red-handed at night and in fog. There are numerous stories about this. Some are chuckles, others more scary. All of this is told in a historical review that was set up on the former turnpike.
"Sneak or stride" is the motto about the best progress in nature. The best example of this is a tree trunk that has been laid over the guide trench. Here the guest has to decide for himself: "If I go over it or not, I dare - or not."
The smuggler path leads through meadows and fields, along a ditch and through forest. It is 2.6 kilometers long and can be explored on your own or with a booked tour. The paths are marked for children and many boards have been set up to explain the animals and plants that grow there. The playfully designed smuggling path runs on German and Dutch territory, completely without borders. The children can learn a lot, play together and also get respect for nature.
The smuggler path is a real experience, especially for school-age children. Climbing into a tree house or finishing a tipi with branches, balancing over tree trunks or crawling into an earth hut is something very special.
