The late medieval fortification tower was originally used as an ammunition storage facility and was popularly renamed from “Fratzenstein” to “Witch Tower” because it served as a prison tower during the time of the witch trials. The round floor plan was intended, as was usual at the time, to deflect projectiles. Today you can see a collection of replica torture instruments and documentation about the witch hunt. During the period of the witch hunt, which peaked in the second half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century, over 50 women, men and children were executed as witches and wizards.

The witch's tower has been preserved in its original state. It is one of the most interesting towers in the Gelnhausen city fortifications. Due to its construction, its diameter of nine meters and its huge wall thickness of 2.80 meters, it was an imposing artillery bulwark. The total height is 24 meters. The entrance door is 4 meters above ground level and can be reached via a small wooden staircase from the battlement walk past. The embrasures in the battlement, so-called window slits, were created by roofing over the previously open battlement walkway.
