Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is an impressive Bangkok landmark and a must-see for every visitor. Located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River in the Thonburi district, it boasts unique architecture and rich history.
The striking central prang, a Khmer-style tower-like spire, rises majestically and is decorated with colorful porcelain fragments and seashells that were once used as ballast on ships from China. This elaborate decoration gives the temple a mesmerizing glow at sunrise and sunset, earning it the name “Temple of Dawn.”
The history of Wat Arun dates back to the Ayutthaya period, when it was known as Wat Makok. After the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767, King Taksin had the temple restored and renamed it Wat Chaeng. Later, during the reigns of King Rama II and Rama III, it was renamed Wat Chaeng. In the early 19th century, the temple took on its current form with the construction of the central Prang.
A special highlight for visitors is the opportunity to climb the steep stairs of the Prang. From up there, you have a breathtaking panoramic view of the river and the Bangkok skyline. However, it is important to exercise caution when climbing as the steps are very steep.
The complex also houses the ordination hall (Ubosot), which is flanked by two imposing guardian figures. Inside the hall there are impressive wall paintings depicting the life of Buddha, as well as a Buddha statue designed by King Rama II.
Wat Arun is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also an active place of worship. Visitors should therefore wear respectful clothing and behave appropriately. The temple is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the entrance fee is 200 baht for adults.
A visit to Wat Arun can be ideally combined with a boat trip on the Chao Phraya River, while also allowing you to explore other nearby attractions such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. The temple is particularly atmospheric in the early morning hours or at sunset, when the light illuminates the porcelain decorations and creates a magical atmosphere.
