Amundsen's bust stands directly on the spot where he set off on his last, fatal seaplane flight. He wanted to save the Italian polar explorer Nobile.
Amundsen crashed - the few remains that were found of his plane can be seen next door in the Polar Museum.

The Sami way of life, including hunting, is demonstrated on the ground floor. Some traditional traps are now banned. Numerous prepared animal exhibits.
Lots of information and exhibits on the upper floor. a. the Nansen and Amundsen expeditions.

The museum is worth a visit. There are information brochures to read along in different languages when visiting the different thematic sections. The sections about the polar explorers Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen are particularly impressive.

Polarmuseum tells the story of the North Pole pioneers, with Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen, unknown to us (Belgium), at the head, but our fellow countryman Adrien de Gerlache from the Belgica expedition (1897-1899) is also mentioned - albeit only briefly.
Furthermore, this museum also presents the hard life of Arctic fishermen, whale hunters and seal hunters on Svalbard (as the Norwegians call Spitsbergen).
Stuffed specimens of seals, arctic foxes, polar bears, musk oxen, ... and a skeleton of a walrus - what a colossus - give an impression of the fauna (there doesn't seem to be much flora there) ... where hunting equipment, such as all kinds of traps, seal chopping sticks, harpoons and guns, ... can also be seen.
The information boards are only in Norwegian, but at the reception you will receive an extensive booklet in English, German or French. It contained so much interesting information that I even copied the entire (24-page!) bundle.
