The Renaissance building of the Hôtel de Ville has an eventful building history: the construction of a town hall according to plans by Jean Bonhomme began in 1627, and the corner pavilion was completed the following year. But after that the work stalled, was interrupted in 1636 due to lack of funds and only resumed in the 1880s, when the second grand piano was built under the direction of Narcisse Brunette according to the original plans.
During the First World War, in 1917, a devastating fire caused by artillery shattered the building. The town hall was completely rebuilt afterwards, but only the facade still shows the original appearance.

The forecourt has been completely redesigned since 2019. The former Place de l'Hôtel de Ville is now the Esplanade Simone Veil. With the naming, the city of Reims honors the great intellectual and politician who died in 2017.
