The oldest Christian cemetery in Salzburg is the Petersfriedhof located in St. Peter's Abbey. Located at the foot of the fortress hill, it is now a popular attraction in the old town.

The cemetery of St. Peter is one of the oldest burial places in Europe - older than the Archabbey itself. Many celebrities of Salzburg were buried here, including Mozart's sister Maria Anna von Berchtold zu Sonnenburg, also known as Nannerl, and Michael Haydn. In the middle of the St. Petersfriedhof you will find the Gothic Margaret Chapel, which is now also used as a place of burial. The idyll appears attractive to tourists - in complete seclusion from the hustle and bustle of the city center, a place of peace and contemplation is offered here.

This cemetery is next to the cemetery of the Benedictine Abbey Nonnberg the oldest Christian burial place in Salzburg. It was already used as a burial place in post-Roman times. Due to its location at the foot of the fortress hill and its “picturesque” terrain, the St. Peter's cemetery was a preferred subject of painting and poetry in the 19th century. In the cemetery of St. Peter there are so-called catacombs carved into the mountain. They did not serve as a burial place and are probably of late antique origin. The Gertraudenkapelle and the Maximuskapelle can be found in it.
A stroll through the cemetery will reveal numerous well-known Salzburg names. But famous foreigners are also buried here, such as B. General Harry J. Collins (born December 7, 1895, Chicago, Illinois, USA; † March 8, 1963 in Salzburg), who was also married in Salzburg during the Second World War and to Irene Gehmacher from Salzburg.
