The Astino Valley is surrounded to the east by the Benaglia hill, to the north by San Sebastiano and the Bastia and San Vigilio hills and to the west by the hill where Villa Bagnada and the Presati Castle stand.

In this area you can undertake various routes that guarantee interesting excursions in nature and among the monuments, towards Città Alta, Sudorno or the Allegrezza forest.

The monastery of Astino was founded in 1107, the year in which the purchase of lands by some notables of Bergamo is documented.

The Vallombrosana Congregation, of Tuscan origin, with the charismatic figure of its founder San Giovanni Gualberto, had fought forcefully for the return of the Church to evangelical purity.

The spread of the Vallombrosans in Northern Italy in the 12th century with the foundation of 17 monasteries was driven by this reforming spirit.

The monastery, which officially became part of the Congregazione dell'Osservanza Vallombrosana in 1493, was the subject of a total reconstruction starting from 1515.

Completed around 1611, it essentially maintained its structure until the Napoleonic suppression in 1797, which marked the end of the monastic use of the building.

The church became a subsidiary of the Ospedale Maggiore between 1832 and 1892, when the complex was transformed into a mental hospital.

It later became a subsidiary church of the parish of Longuelo, but the complex was subsequently sold to private individuals in 1923, favoring its abandonment and degradation until recent years.

In 2007 the entire complex was purchased by the Congregazione della Misericordia Maggiore -MIA which took steps to completely restore the church, which was returned to the city, for worship and for public use in 2013.

The overall restoration promoted by the MIA of the vast complex and its related dependencies is still underway.
